Contact Binaries
Despite being the most abundant (by space density) of interacting binary stars, W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) stars are not understood structurally. Their stellar components are in physical contact, and share a common convective envelope. Observations demand large-scale energy exchange between components, as do considerations of hydrostatic and thermal equilibrium. Yet solutions in complete equilibri...
متن کاملThermals in contact binaries
The buoyant rise of thermals (i.e. bubbles of enhanced entropy, but initially in pressure equilibrium) is investigated numerically in three dimensions for the case of an adiabatically stratified layer covering 6–9 pressure scale heights. It is found that these bubbles can travel to large heights before being braked by the excess pressure that builds up in order to drive the gas sideways in the ...
متن کاملThe structure of contact binaries
In radiative layers of rotating stars the luminosity carried by circulation currents through a surface of constant entropy (circulation luminosity) is shown to be positive. The corresponding decrease in the temperature gradient is important in the secondary of contact binaries. This result removes the deadlock in the theory of contact binaries. The resulting treatment of contact binaries is inv...
متن کاملBernoulli’s equation and the contact binaries
In a recent paper Bernoulli’s equation has been so interpreted as tomean that the Jacobi energy is constant over the surface of a stationary contact binary. We argue that Bernoulli’s result can not be interpreted in this way and show that such a constraint on the Jacobi energy is in general not compatible with stationarity. We also show that, under isentropic conditions, a surface potential gra...
متن کاملEvolution of rotation in binaries: physical processes
In this review, we describe the physical processes driving the dynamical evolution of binary stars, namely the circularization of the orbit and the synchronization of their spin and orbital rotation. We also discuss the possible role of the elliptic instability which turns out to be an unavoidable ingredient of the evolution of binary stars.
